Setting up checkout flow in Shop-Script

In Shop-Script the default checkout flow consists of the following 4 steps:

  • contact information
  • shipping
  • payment
  • confirmation

Each of these steps requests some input from customers who should either enter their name, address, comments to order, or select available shipping and payment options.

Depending on the design theme used in your online store, each of these 4 steps can be displayed either in a separate page or as part of one common checkout page (“one-page checkout”).

Checkout steps order is not fixed, you are free to place them in any order suitable for your personal online store. To change the steps order, simply drag-n-drop them in backend screen ”Settings & rarr; Checkout“.

None of these step is mandatory. You may disable each step which is not necessary for the operation of your online store.

Below are provided several tips on setting up checkout steps.

  1. Try to keep your checkout flow as simple as possible. The less actions are required from customer the higher are chances that order will be placed.
  2. If you sell only digital products (software, e-books, etc.) with online delivery there no need to offer the shipping method selection step; in this case you can disable that checkout step.
  3. If your online store operates within a very limited territory and does not offer online payment options then you may disable both the shipping and the payment method selection steps. An example of such a local online store is a website for online lunch booking in a cafe located inside some business center.
  4. It is not recommended to disable the order confirmation step because it displays important order summary: names of ordered products, their quantity, selected shipping method, shipping cost, discount, tax, and the total amount. When a customer can see all these details before completing an order, it is least probable that the customer will request a refund.
